Little Pandas (ages 3-5) Reviews

Pandas Kung Fu

I am blown away by how phenomenal the teachers are – firm but gentle – and the kids love the class!

My daughter started taking classes at this studio a few months ago, and we are very happy with the program.  She is only 4 years old, and the instructors are absolutely incredible at keeping the little ones engaged and enthusiastic about learning kung fu. My friends who have kids in Tae Kwon Do or Karate complain it is making their children aggressive and wanting to fight all the time.  I have toured other martial arts studios and seen out of control children all over the place.  The kids classes here are designed so well! All the kids are calm, attentive, and eager to follow directions. My daughter has shown more confidence in herself since she started classes here. The little kids class focuses on balance, control, listening, discipline, etc.  But they also play games and they give each child personal attention to their own skill level.  There is emphasis on life skills and they take time in every class to discuss important lessons for children, such as anti-kidnapping and how to manage bullying. The teachers are SO nice and non-intimidating.  They are fantastic with children! I can’t emphasize more how great they are with kids!!!  My daughter adores teacher Savannah, Gannon, and George!   She has also enjoyed teacher Gary and Chris. It is a special talent to know how to communicate with and to manage small children.  I am blown away by how phenomenal the teachers are – firm but gentle – and the kids love the class!  My only complaint is the class times during the week are really late in the day.  I am not local, and my kids are usually eating dinner at that time, so I can’t get my daughter to the classes during the week.  The quality of the classes here are worth the money and the drive!!! – Madeline Y., Parent of Sadie F.

We are very thankful to you all for helping make our Ian a better person.

Ian earns his orange sash

The classes at the Academy have helped Ian develop his presence of being. By this, we mean a holistic change more than a one dimensional thing like being less shy. Ian has grown to become much more aware of himself and his surroundings. For example, when he is at a party, he looks around to make sure all the other kids are ‘taken care of’, be it bringing them a toy or closing a door that someone left open. Now we don’t know if this is a result of the Life Skills or learning Pak Sau or the fact that everyone always starts Wing Chun class with their own orange cones, but we are very thankful to you all for helping make our Ian a better person. –Wendy & Lei, parents of Ian

Very very happy parent!

3 months into Kung Fu, he got student of the month, grades rocketed up…

Kung Fu Girls in Burbank

Ria, Now a Dragon

Started taken my son there for almost a year now. He is 6 years old and shy plus he’s the smallest not in school (we were worried that he would get bully in school) he was having problems in school with homework and his grades need help, plus discipline at home. We also have a 4 year old little girl. Long story short Kung Fu showed him to help others and to focus. 3 months into Kung Fu, he got student of the month, grades rocketed up, and now his confidence level is high without the cockiness ……. we only go weekends but we love it. It is a bit of a drive for us and of course money is always a factor. But to us the outcome is priceless…….. – Gavin P., parent of Gavin P.

I think that Kung Fu is a really fun Martial Arts

When I was in Tigers my favorite thing in Kung Fu was when we could play games. My favorite game was the game where we could tag people with the ball. I think that Kung Fu is a really fun Martial Arts. My favorite form is Ping Kuen. It is my favorite because there are a lot of big moves and I like big moves. There are two main forms of Kung Fu that we learn about – Shaolin and Wing Chun. I like Shaolin a lot because it has big moves based on animal actions. I also really like Wing Chun because it teaches conservation of motion and makes you efficient in your moves.
– Ria M., age 8

We are still new to the school but I put my 4year old and 7year old in this school.  The teachers are patient and very knowledgeable. They respect the children and their parents. My kids are upset that there are only six classes a week! I was not pushed or harassed to put my kids in when they went in for an introductory class. The staff are all very respectful and answered my questions (which there were many) with professionalism and with actual answers rather than “that’s just the way it is” or “that’s what our Sifu says”.  My kids enjoy watching the “older” kids and adults practice and we are not asked to leave when we go in early or stay late so they can watch. They teach anti-bullying and “Stranger Danger” so the kids do not become bullies and learn how to deal with bullies in a positive manner rather than “teaching the bully a lesson” (aka fighting). They teach the kids how to get away from a stranger if they are grabbed, they are taught who to go to and who can help them, as well as many other techniques that keep them safe along with their martial art education. Very very happy parent! – Brenda R., Parent of Sean & Liam

Dragons (ages 8-13) Reviews

Dragons Kung Fu

Teach your children all the important things in life like respect, focus and how to treat people in everyday life.

I studied under Sifu Tei in 1996 and since that time, I have gotten married and have 2 amazing boys, Nick 11 and Kris 8, who also studied with Sifu Tei. I never thought learning Kung Fu would change my life so drastically but it has. California Academy of Martial Arts is a great place to not only learn Kung Fu, but to strengthen your soul and teach your children all the important things in life like respect, focus and how to treat people in everyday life. You’ll meet a lot of great people there and make friends that you’ll have the rest of your life. It was something I needed in my life and your children will be grateful too. – Kent Niepert and Family, now living in China

Wing Chun Woman
Emily and Adonai, both dedicated Wing Chun students

I’m thankful for every single second I get to spend learning the art of Wing Chun from C.A.M.A.

As someone who has hunted a long time for a kwoon worthy of falling in love with, I can safely say that I’ve FINALLY found my Wing Chun Kung Fu home here. And for very good reason. To give you a little perspective on my journey, I grew up in Ohio (which is not exactly the epicenter for legitimate martial arts training). I first became addicted to martial arts when I was 10 years old, and after my first few years of training at the dojang that spawned my addiction, I then moved on to experience a wide variety of schools ranging from absolutely HORRIBLE (dishonest, abusive, negligent) to… downright amazing (a rarity, of course). The amazing schools were more easily discovered when I moved to New York City and then here to Southern California a few years later. This place is AMAZING. I don’t say that lightly. When I’ve made a decision on where to train, it means that I want to learn and grow with that place for many, many years to come. It means that I’m ecstatic to train there, and when I head home or am on the road then I’m just as excited to practice on my own and study the art in my spare time. When I’m training, or even reviewing the material I need to learn in order to progress… that’s my personal form of meditation. It keeps me balanced. The most important thing to me is the quality of the training. If you do your research on C.A.M.A. and SiFu Tei, there is no shortage of information highlighting the legitimacy of this place. But beyond that, the respectful atmosphere, the well-organized schedule, the friendly and encouraging instructors, the clean environment, as well as a bunch of other awesome things that you’ll just have to see for yourself when you get your ass in there to train… well, I’ve found a needle in a haystack, and I am not letting go of it. I’m proud and humbled (yes, you can be both) by the opportunity to train here, and I’m thankful for every single second I get to spend learning the art of Wing Chun from C.A.M.A. – Emii

California Academy of Martial Arts is an amazing school. I can honestly say this place changed my outlook in life. I was overweight with little motivation or hobby to come by. I have been attending C.A.M.A for over 3 years now and I can NEVER get enough. Thank you Sifu Tei and Sifu Nancy for being great role models and for sharing your skills and knowledge of such a great art to help improve my own. – Adonai I.

There’s a really great group of people here.

Been practicing here over a year now in the adult classes (I am an adult, though some would debate this). I come here twice a week, but would do more if not for working annoyingly far away. To start, there’s a really great group of people here. Very warm and friendly. Egos left at the door. It feels like a group of friends who treat the training seriously while still managing to enjoy themselves. If you’re looking for a Wing Chun, or Kung Fu school in general, this is a strong choice. If you are serious about learning Wing Chun, not just from a technique application angle, but a cultural one as well, this is a great fit. I think it’s most accurate to view this school as a syllabus of types of class, spread over 7 days a week that cover different parts of a solid Wing Chun syllabus. The full week’s worth of classes will cover Wing Chun forms, drills, light sparring, gear sparring, history, theory, weapons forms of Wing Chun, weapons forms of non-WIng Chun weapons and other forms that were close to Wing Chun at the time of its inception. Syllabus-wise, it reads as intended to be very holistic in its design. If you can put in time every day to train, you’ll get a hell of a lot out of it. I’ve not been able to come for more than 2-3 days a week, but I see the students who hit 5 days a week on average and their transformation over time has been significant. Due to my work schedule, I tend to hit Monday and Wednesday. Those days have form work, drills and sparring (as do Saturdays and Sundays). Other days mix it up. Even with just being able to hit two days (and occasionally Thursday for Chi Sau, cardio and weapons), I do feel I get a lot out of the class. A year on, and I’m happy with the school and would recommend it. Just be aware that if you’re looking for a McDojo / Belt Farm, this is not for you. If you’re looking for something more involved, you’ll probably find a happy place here. – Dan B.

I still learn new things every time I come in.

Are you looking for a school to learn authentic Wing Chun?  Then look no further cuz this is the school for you. I was always interested in martial arts, but had a bad experience at a martial arts school when I was younger, and felt hesitant on joining ever again. Luckily I gave C.A.M.A a chance, and boy was it the right decision! I have been training at at C.A.M.A. for 1 year and it has been wonderful!  The chief instructor(Sifu) Todd Shawn Tei is incredibly skilled in the art of Kung Fu.  One of the wonderful things about him is, unlike other schools, he always there leading the classes!  So you get to have direct instruction from him!  Also, he has trained with both of Ip Man’s sons: Ip Chung and Ip Ching, and if you don’t know who they are, they are the current Grandmasters of Wing Chun internationally! Once you join the school, you are part of a family.  We do other functions together as a school like birthday parties, field trips to Buddhist temples, and social nights just to name a few. If you are interested in other styles too, they offer other forms of Kung Fu as well: Tai Chi, Choy Li Fut, and Shaolin forms just to name a few. Joining this school has been one of the best decisions of my life!  Wing Chun Kung Fu is so much fun and very practical!! – Sean M., student since 2010 Still lovin the kung fu life!!! This october will be 4 years for me at this kwoon (chinese name for kung fu school. ITS NOT A DOJO) I cant belive its been almost 4 years since I joined my kung fu family. Ive made sooo many friends here.  I’ve watched students come and go, join and quit. The one thing thats never quit is my Sifu’s commitment. Sifu Tei is simply the best. He even puts up with my crazy personality. Lol I still learn new things every time I come in. That is the true beauty of this style. YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING. I am now a what would be considered a diciple. I’m not a new fish, and I’m not a master…. but don’t get it twisted. I can spar with the best of ’em. 😉 WHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! – Jennifer S.

I wanted to learn the real Wing Chun that Bruce Lee learned, not some modified version of it.

I shopped around a lot before deciding on this school. I wanted to learn the real wing chun that Bruce Lee learned, not some modified version of it. People here are nice, considerate and want you to learn, excel and progress. Enrollment contracts here are standard and the same contract you will get at any reputable martial arts school in Los Angeles. I am happy with my decision. –Allan W., student since 2010

I can honestly say that it has been the best decision I have made in my entire life.

You will not find a better martial arts school or Sifu.  Period.  If you are looking to train to protect and defend yourself realistically on the street, you will not find a better style than Wing Chun or a greater school than California Academy of Martial Arts.  Wing Chun was developed for anyone of any size to be able to defend themselves against anyone else of any size.  You learn to deflect and redirect energy and use it against your opponent, rather than use muscle and size or hard blocks.  While MMA has become very popular, it is not a martial art.  It is a sport with rules.  Remember, on the street, there are no rules.  Wing Chun is a true martial art that will prepare you for real life situations.  At California Academy of Martial Arts, you will gain confidence, self-esteem, character and get in shape, all while learning the greatest martial art. It has been exactly 3 years to the day that I signed up for classes at California Academy of Martial Arts.  I can honestly say that it has been the best decision I have made in my entire life.  Before attending the school, I was overweight and unhappy, spending most of my time hanging out in front of the t.v. playing video games.  I knew there was something very important missing from my life.  I had been talking with a friend for awhile about martial arts.  He studied a different style and through our talks, I realized I was interested in martial arts, but I needed a style and a school that would fit me.  Being a huge Bruce Lee fan, I did some research and found out the style he had trained in – Wing Chun.  I did a quick Google search to find any nearby Wing Chun schools and California Academy of Martial Arts came up.  Little did I know that it was the finest martial arts school around and that I would be embarking on a journey that would change my life forever.  I have lost a ton of weight, gotten healthy, gained confidence and made lifelong friendships.  I have learned to use the knowledge I’ve gained at the school not only to protect myself, but to handle many situations in my personal life.  C.A.M.A. provides not only unparalleled instruction in wing chun, but a true sense of family at the school.  You will develop not only physically, but also spiritually, mentally and socially.  Sifu Tei, the students and instructors are the greatest people around and I have grown so much and become a better person and martial artist because of them. C.A.M.A. will equip you with the skills to defend yourself and provide you with a true martial arts experience.  As with all things in life, you will only get out of it as much as you put in.  So do yourself a favor and come to California Academy of Martial Arts and start changing your life for the better.  You will not be sorry. – Chris M., now a Senior Instructor

Wish I’d have found it sooner.

As an aging, creaky, cantankerous misanthrope who wanted to train in a martial art to defend himself from aggressive people who might be offended by my opinions, I happened upon CAMA in Burbank simply because it was close.
Fortunately, I not only discovered a martial art perfectly suited to my limited  mobility, I met friendly, skilled, tolerant–and seriously badass– instructors who ignored my foibles (and utter lack of flexiblity) and quickly taught me to focus and rise above my attitudes.
Bring the kids to give them a leg up (pun intended) in the schoolyard and in life.
Wish I’d have found it sooner. – Dan K.
